What does Aviation Safety Management consist of?

Safety is an inevitable factor for the businesses operating in the aviation industry, may it be an airline or Airport crew. The bar for maintaining safety standards is always high. While there are so many ways of ensuring passenger safety in the aviation industry, the standard is set by an Aviation Safety Management system

The SMS consists of several codes and practices that help bring an organization's security strategy in line with their business objectives. Implementing an SMS is no child's play as it moves beyond authoritative compliances and guidelines.

It consists of the following core components.

  1. Hazard and incident reporting

This module helps in discovery of potential and real threats in the safety implementation of the organization. These threats are studied, reported and dealt with a procedure for which ICAO has given framework guidelines.

The module is an inseparable part of the SMS and should be built in accordance with the nature of the business. Many a time, an Aviation Safety Consultant is hired for laying the entire framework for threat detection.

  1. Flight Data Analysis (FDA)

A significant proportion of threats can be isolated by analysing the flight data. An integrated SMS, records and monitors various parameters associated with the flight to gauge safety loopholes.

With active knowledge of these loopholes, the organization can take steps in correcting them and maintain low risk at all times for the customers. Flight data analysis collects data on a multitude of points that can be used to take better managerial decisions.

  1. Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA)

LOSA refers to the threats that may arise from human error and operational procedures. It's a carefully designed system for measuring the potential dangers that the activities contained in an operations line can give birth to. It helps in battling such perils by creating a counter-measure policy framework.

These audits are an essential part of the health check and vulnerability analysis of an organization's operational capabilities.
